The Astin siblings entered the Roma Street Police Headquarters. Phoebe was pleased to have Julius by her side. On the rare occasions that she had to frequent the station on her own, she felt like a species of bug being studied by all and sundry.

'Good day to you, Mr and Miss Astin. The detectives are in; I believe you are both trustworthy and can find your way there,' Sergeant John said in jest and waved a hand in the direction. The fact that he had several constables and half a dozen members of the public milling around for his attention allowed them to slip through quickly.

Offering their thanks, the handsome pair made their way to the end of the hallway, to the very last room allocated to the newest police team.

Phoebe saw Harland before he saw her. He stood, arms folded, staring at the board as Detective Gilbert Payne appeared to be writing salient points from his notes. Her heart stopped for a moment as she admired his presence.

Julius tapped on the door, and both men looked around. Phoebe saw the look of delight in Harland's eyes before concern quickly replaced it.

'Julius, Phoebe, is everything all right?' he asked, moving to the door and ushering them in, closing the office door behind them.

'Hello detectives,' Phoebe said, and Julius shook both men's hands. 'We have news that I hope will be of use.'

'Anything would be of great assistance, Miss Astin,' Gilbert assured her, and pulled two seats out at the meeting table for them to be seated before returning to his position by the board. Harland hovered in between.

'We would have come to you,' Harland said, and Julius assured him it was no bother.

'We were out and about,' Phoebe added. She dropped her voice as she often did when speaking of the dearly departed, and Julius kept up his ruse that he did not see the spirits. Both looked behind to ensure the door was closed before she spoke.

'Detectives, I believe I have found your offender.'

'You have!' Gilbert exclaimed, his face relaying his shock and then delight.

'This morning, Alma and Winnifred appeared to me convinced they share the same fiancé. They tracked him down,' Phoebe said and explained what had taken place.

'You took a great risk,' Harland said.

'As I have also said,' Julius gave his sister a stern look, and she shook her head slightly at both men.

'I was never in any danger sitting at the omnibus stop, and I did not pass on the message until the omnibus was in sight.'

'But what if he struck you?' Gilbert said. 'Oh, forgive me, Miss Astin. It is not for me to question your movements.'

'But I thank you for your concern, Detective Payne,' Phoebe said to the kindly detective. 'The man's name, or rather the name he is using now, is Mr Joseph Facey.'

Gilbert wrote the name on the board and paused at Phoebe's description of fair-haired and blue eyes.

'That is interesting,' Gilbert said, looking at his notes on the board. 'So you
